Corrections and content updates.
What we do when something we published is wrong, and how you can tell us about it.
Reporting an error
Tell us what you found and where. Include the page address and, if you can, the source you think is correct. Every report is read.
How we investigate
We check the claim against primary sources. If the source we originally used was wrong, we look for every other page relying on it rather than fixing only the page that was reported.
How corrections are labelled
A material correction — one that changes the meaning of the content — is published on the article with the original publication date, the correction date, what changed and why. We do not quietly edit and move on.
Minor changes
Typographical and formatting fixes that do not change meaning are made without a correction notice, and do not reset the last-reviewed date.
Review dates
A last-reviewed date changes only when a person has actually reviewed the content again. It is never advanced automatically to make content look fresher.
Methodology corrections
If the way an analytical output is produced or described turns out to be wrong, the correction is published on the methodology page as well as anywhere the description appeared.
Model and data incidents
A model or data incident — an output that was wrong because of a data or system fault — is handled separately from an editorial error. Both are corrected, but they have different causes and different fixes, and conflating them hides the real problem.
